Digital Toolkit - Call to Action Day

“Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants.” – Louis Brandeis, 1913 Harper’s Weekly
Call to Action Day is the concluding portion of the 2021 Shine the Light on Human Trafficking Conference: Root Causes and Intersections. The virtual conference is on March 8 and 9, 2021, with a series of experts sharing their experiences and solutions against labor and sex trafficking, including legislative actions and local efforts.

We’ve learned that human trafficking is not just a problem in other countries but also in our own communities.  We also have been reminded that human trafficking does not exist simply as an isolated phenomenon.  This form of modern slavery is rooted in an unjust distribution of resources, in racism, in gender inequality, in policies that blame the victims, and in unjust immigration laws.

No one’s value should be reduced to economic profit or someone else’s sexual pleasure. Take Action Today with this Digital Call to Action Day line-up (actions and tweets are outlined below).

Then see the Take Action Sheet for additional ideas on how to continue taking action individually and with others.

Action Alert I – Central American Women and Children Protection Act

Action Alert II – Immigration System as Root Cause

Action Alert III –Root Causes of Human Trafficking

Click here to write and call your Members of Congress urging their support and co-sponsorship of this federal legislation that addresses the root causes of migration so that women and children in particular are not forced to migrate and become extremely vulnerable to human traffickers. This legislation specifically prohibits any funds going to the governments of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Instead, the funds must be channeled through civil society.
Click here to write your Members of Congress urging them to address the link between immigration policies and human trafficking. When people cannot safely provide for themselves, they have a right to migrate. Because of our dysfunctional immigration policies, many people seeking our help are put further at risk. Our priority should be to help impoverished nations to become self-sufficient while fixing our own broken immigration system.
Click here to write your Members of Congress calling for legislation that ensures sufficient income for a person to support themselves and their families, ends the gender wage gap, ensures transparency in the supply chain, enacts compassionate immigration laws, and ends racism. Further, we need to ensure that we do not punish the victims but rather criminalize the “johns” and those who profit from the prostitution industry.

GENERAL

65% of trafficked persons are female, including 19% who are girls. And 1 in every 3 trafficked persons is a child. That’s criminal. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

40.3 million people are enslaved: 20.1 million in forced labor, 4.8 million in forced sexual exploitation, and 15.4 million in forced marriage. 5.4 out of every 1000 people are victims/survivors of modern slavery. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

Top industries with forced labor: agriculture/horticulture, construction, garments/textiles under sweatshop conditions, catering/restaurants, domestic work, entertainment, sex industry. Also found in food processing, healthcare and contract cleaning. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

Traffickers prey upon children in the U.S. foster care system. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

Human Trafficking is big business – pocketing $150 billion a year for traffickers – with 66% or $99 billion coming from commercial sexual exploitation #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

Trafficking is an injustice rooted in dynamics of our global world and current global economy. Trafficking converges with global flows of migration, patterns of armed conflict/ war, climate induced displacement and economic supply chains of consumer goods.  #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

CENTRAL AMERICAN WOMEN AND CHILDREN PROTECTION ACT

Thanx @RepAnnWagner & @ NormaJTorres for sponsoring Central Am Women & Children Protection Act – helping women & children in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

Tell your Congress Person to cosponsor Central Am Women & Children Protection Act – helping women & children in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras. No funds go directly to the governments. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

Many women and children in the Northern Triangle are frequent victims of lawlessness and violence because of failed or marginalized states – and also vulnerable to trafficking. Support Central Am Women & Children Protection Act. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

ROOT CAUSES

Root causes of human trafficking icl poverty, lack of education / health care, food insecurity, unemployment (esp youth), gender inequality, supply chain abuse, insufficient social protection w lack of punishment of perpetrators, racism, violence against women / girls. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

As we address the root causes of migration, people will feel less impelled to flee their home countries. When people migrate they become very vulnerable to both sex and labor trafficking. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

Undocumented immigrants are easily trapped by traffickers because the immigrants are afraid of law enforcement and deportation, esp women and children with lower levels of education. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking

When people are not able to provide for themselves and their families, they have a right to migrate. #2021ShineTheLight #EndHumanTrafficking
